HISTORY
THE original building, occupIED an entire STREET block including; Longmarket, Church, Bree and Loop streets and consisted of boarding houses, a school, a stable and a retail shop.
HISTORY
In 1969, the site was cleared, and a new building, called ‘City Park’ was built by the City of Cape Town as a car park with the City Engineering offices situated on the upper levels.
The property was subsequently converted from a commercial building and parking garage into a 17-storey hospital and opened as ‘City Park Hospital’ in 1983, later becoming the oldest private hospital in Cape Town.
In 2001, the hospital was renamed Christiaan Barnard Hospital in tribute to South Africa’s most famous surgeon, ‘Christiaan Barnard’, who pioneered the first open heart transplant procedure.
After providing medical care for more than three decades, including performing its 200th heart transplant in 2014, the facility was vacated in 2016 when the hospital was moved to the Foreshore and renamed Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial. Hospital.
